(Episode 1) When the world began ... (15,000 BC to 1800 AD): The opening episode in the series recounts the rich and varied history of the first occupants of the land. 500 years later comes the arrival of the Europeans in the east, and the story of Jacques Cartier. On the Pacific Coast, Nootka chief Maquinna meets John Jewitt who becomes his captive, and eventually, his friend.
(Episode 2) Adventurers & mystics (1540 to 1670): At first simply a barrier to be sailed around, North America becomes a place where permanent colonies are established. The episode traced the early fur and fishery trades, leading to settlements in Acadia, Newfoundland and Quebec. It follows the development of New France, the story of Samuel de Champlain, and of Aboriginal alliances and conflicts.
